The walk
The walk starts from the car park P2 An der Ringmauer in Rüdesheim am Rhein. It climbs by vineyard tracks above the town, reaches the line of the old rack railway, and joins the Rheinsteig up the slope, under the cable car and into the Niederwald, to the Niederwalddenkmal with its Germania figure. It returns to the Niederwald temple, goes down 326 steps to the vineyard road by the Rebenhaus, takes the vineyard path past the Ramstein lookout, and returns along the Panoramaweg above the town.
It is 4.7 km with 219 m of ascent; allow about 1¾ hours. The grade is Easy, as the tourist office rates it, though the climb through the vineyards is steady.
The monument and the Osteinsche Park are freely accessible, says the Staatliche Schlösser und Gärten Hessen, which looks after them. The 326 steps down to the vineyard road by the Rebenhaus are steep: take care on them when wet.
The tourist office lists P2 An der Ringmauer and the car park at the monument as charged, and lists Rüdesheim station for arriving by train; Deutsche Bahn is modernising the right-bank line between Troisdorf and Wiesbaden from 10 July to 12 December 2026, so check its page before travelling by train.
