The walk

The walk starts from the Parkhaus Endertstraße in Cochem and goes to the valley station of the Pinnerkreuz chairlift. From there it climbs on foot by a steep path in zigzags and steps to the Pinnerkreuz viewpoint, which looks over Cochem and the Reichsburg, and on along the path along the slope to the Wackelei, a slate rock spur with a view of the Winneburg. It comes back the same way, crosses the old town by the Moselpromenade, Markt and Herrenstraße, and climbs by the streets and steps of Burgfrieden to the Reichsburg before returning through the town.

It is 8.2 km with 323 m of ascent; allow about 3 hours. The grade is Moderate: the Pinnerkreuz climb is steep and the tourist board rates its whole Cochemer Ritterrunde, which this walk shares ground with, difficult. About 70% of it is on paths.

The slope above the chairlift gets the sun early and the dark slate heats up, so the tourist board advises doing the Pinnerkreuz climb early in the morning, or taking the chairlift in high temperatures. The steps and cobbles in the old town are slippery when wet.

Parkhaus Endertstraße is run by the town and mapped as charged in OpenStreetMap. The tourist board's page for the Ritterrunde mentions no closure; it names the chairlift valley station as its start.
