The walk

From the small car park at the top of Belfast Terrace, walk up the gravel walkway as it zigzags east through wilding pines, past the first history panels of the Time Walk. Where the path forks, take the right-hand arm to the Basket of Dreams sculpture at the top of the loop. Carry on north over open tussock to the rocky summit lookout at 841 m, facing the Remarkables and the Frankton Arm. Come back to the sculpture, go down the left-hand arm and retrace the walkway.

It is 5.2 km round with 412 m of ascent; allow about 3 hours. The grade is Easy: a steady climb on a gravel walkway, then open tussock to the top.

The upper track crosses private land under a public access agreement, so keep to it; the hill's true top, at 907 m, is on private farmland further on. The top is open to the weather. The council plans to fell wilding pines in stages and says the walk will stay open or be signed round the work. The panels tell Queenstown's story from Kāi Tahu times through the gold rush.

The car park in Belfast Terrace is small, in a residential street. The town centre is about 1 km downhill on foot, and Orbus buses serve Queenstown.

Good to know

  • Te Tapunui is the hill's Māori name; the council links it to the hill's place as a source of fresh water
  • Panels on the way up tell Queenstown's story, from Kāi Tahu use of the land through the gold rush to today
  • The Basket of Dreams sculpture stands at the top of the loop, and a small tarn ringed by bog pine lies beside the path
  • The lookout at 841 m faces the Remarkables, Cecil Peak and the Frankton Arm; the true top is further on, on private farmland
