The walk

From the car park by the Lac d'Orédon, take the Sentier des Laquettes, which climbs west through mountain pines and past small pools to the dam of Lac d'Aubert. Cross between Lac d'Aubert and Lac d'Aumar, with the Pic de Néouvielle above, and follow the path along the south shore of Lac d'Aumar. A path then runs east along the slope and drops back to Orédon.

It is 9.3 km round with 419 m of ascent; allow about 3½ hours. The grade is Moderate: stony mountain paths, with short stretches on the lakeside lane.

The lakes are in the Réserve naturelle du Néouvielle, known for its old mountain pines. Keep to the paths and take all rubbish home. In summer the road above Orédon to Lac d'Aubert is closed to cars in the daytime and a shuttle bus runs; the road up from Fabian to Orédon is closed in winter. This is high ground: storms build quickly on summer afternoons, and snow can lie from autumn into June.

The free car park is beside the Lac d'Orédon, at the end of the road from Fabian in the Aure valley.
