The walk

The walk starts from the Long Street car park in Newport (Trefdraeth). Lanes lead out of the town to the foot of Carningli Common, and a path climbs the north side of the hill past the Carn Ingli barrow cemetery to the rocky summit, Mynydd Carningli, 347 m. The summit is ringed by the ramparts and hut circles of an Iron Age hill fort, and the views run over Newport Bay and the Nevern estuary to Dinas Head. The path goes on along the hill to its west top and comes down by a different line to the town.

It is 6.3 km with 333 m of ascent; allow about 2½ hours. The grade is Easy.

The ground is steep and rugged near the top, and the common is open: sheep, cattle and ponies roam freely, so keep dogs under close control. It is exposed to the wind, and the paths are hard to follow in mist. There is a fire risk on the common in dry weather.

The Long Street car park charges. Newport has pubs, cafés and shops, and two beaches, the Parrog and Newport Sands.

Good to know

  • Carningli is a former volcano: its hard dolerite is the solid core of the magma, which last erupted about 450 million years ago
  • An Iron Age hill fort on the hill still shows parts of its rampart and its hut circles
  • The name is said to mean Mountain of Angels, and the hill is linked with St Brynach, a sixth-century missionary
  • Newport's Welsh name, Trefdraeth, means beach town
