The walk
The walk starts from the Hook's Car car park and goes out and back along the top of Stanage Edge, a four-mile gritstone edge and the most famous climbing crag in the Peak. After a short climb onto the edge it heads north-west past Robin Hood's Cave to the trig point on High Neb (458 m), then returns the same way. Below High Neb runs the Long Causeway, an old packhorse road. It is mostly on path, with some track.
It is 6.8 km with 148 m of ascent; allow about 2 hours. The grade is Easy: once you are up on the edge the path is nearly level, though it is stony in places.
The edge is a line of crags with a sheer drop on one side, so keep back from it, especially in a strong wind, and take care not to knock stones onto climbers below. On a clear day there are views over the Hope Valley and Hathersage. There are no mapped water sources on the route.
The car park charges a fee. Hathersage station is about 2 km away in a straight line.
