The walk
The walk starts from the car park at Poole's Cavern on the edge of Buxton. Paths climb through Grin Low Woods, which cover the hollows and spoil heaps left by centuries of lime burning, to a stile on to the open hilltop and the tower of Solomon's Temple on Grin Low (434 m). The return drops off the east side of the hill and comes back down through the woods by another path.
It is 2.1 km with 105 m of ascent; allow about 1 hour. The grade is Easy: a short walk, uphill all the way to the tower.
The tower is a two-storey folly, rebuilt in 1896 by public subscription on the site of a Bronze Age burial mound. Its narrow spiral stair, slippery when wet, leads to a view over Buxton and the moors around it. The woodland paths are rough and uneven, with roots, rock and old quarry hollows, and can be muddy. The woods are a Site of Special Scientific Interest with six kinds of orchid, and the country park welcomes dogs.
The Buxton Civic Association's car park charges; there are toilets and a café at the cavern. Buxton station is about 1.5 km away.
