The walk
The walk starts from the pay car park in Castleton and makes a circuit. It climbs west out of the village, then north to Mam Tor (517 m), the 'shivering mountain', ringed by an Iron Age hill fort. From there it follows the Great Ridge east over Hollins Cross and Back Tor (438 m) to Lose Hill (476 m), turns back along the ridge a short way and drops south to Castleton. It is mostly on path, with some road near the village.
It is 10 km with 440 m of ascent; allow about 3½ hours. The grade is Moderate: the paths are good, but the climb out of Castleton is steep.
Mam Tor's east face is unstable, and landslips there closed the old A625 for good in 1979, so keep back from the edge. The ridge is exposed to the wind: check the forecast, and in mist or winter carry a map and compass. There are no mapped water sources on the route.
The car park charges a fee. The village has four show caves and Peveril Castle. The nearest station is Hope, about 3 km away in a straight line.
