The walk

From the big car park at the south end of Sognsvann, a few minutes' walk from the end of metro line 5, take the gravel path along the west shore of the lake. It follows the water through the woods, rounds the north end and comes back down the east side on Ankerveien, a wide forest road, to the bathing places, jetties and kiosk at the south end.

It is 3.8 km round with 34 m of ascent; allow about an hour. The grade is Easy: level and wide, and walked and run all year.

The city gives the path round the lake as 3.3 km; ours adds the walk to and from the car park. Cycling on the path is discouraged. At the south end there are toilets, three bathing jetties and approved places to light a fire, and the city advises against swimming for a day after heavy rain.

The large car park at the south end is run by the city and is free. The smaller one nearest the metro station began charging on weekdays in 2026. Metro line 5 runs to Sognsvann, the end of the line.
