The hike

The walk starts at the South Falls day-use area in Silver Falls State Park. The Canyon Trail drops into the canyon at South Falls and follows the creek to Lower South Falls. It then turns up the north fork, past Lower North Falls, Drake Falls, Middle North Falls and Twin Falls, to North Falls. A short trail from the North Falls trailhead leads on to Upper North Falls. The Rim Trail then runs back through Douglas fir forest above the canyon, past the top of Winter Falls, to South Falls.

It is a 7.5-mile (12 km) loop with 730 feet (224 m) of climbing; allow about 3½ hours. The grade is Moderate: a long loop on good trail, with flights of steps in and out of the canyon.

Pets and bicycles are not allowed on the Canyon Trail or on the trails that lead into the canyon, which are the Maple Ridge, Winter and Twin Falls trails. Those three also make shorter loops possible. The paths behind the falls are wet, so expect to get damp and watch your footing.

Day-use parking costs $10 for Oregon residents and $12 for others, paid at machines at the trailhead. The park gates open at 8 a.m. from October to February and at 7 a.m. in summer, and close between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m., depending on the month.
