The walk
From Kilbroney Park car park, take the forest road south and then east along the forest roads across the southern slopes of the hill, following the line of the old Slievemartin Trail. At the head of the valley a track and path climb north to the summit of Slieve Martin, with Carlingford Lough below. The way down follows the tracks by the stream and above the Cloughmore Stone, then the forest roads back through Rostrevor Forest to the park.
It is 6.5 km round with 464 m of ascent; allow about 3½ hours. The grade is Moderate: forest roads and stony tracks with a long steady climb, and a rougher path over open hillside to the top.
OpenStreetMap records the Slievemartin Trail as not waymarked in 2024, so carry a map; the summit is exposed and often in cloud. nidirect says there may occasionally be restricted access to parts of Rostrevor Forest during work, and describes an ongoing programme of felling and replanting: look at the signs.
The council charges for vehicles at Kilbroney Park, one of its four main parks, at the manned car park office (9 am to 5 pm daily); there is no charge to enter on foot or by bicycle. Kilbroney Park has a café with toilets.
