The walk

From the Lac-aux-Castors car park on chemin Remembrance, walk past the pavilion to chemin Olmsted, the broad gravel carriage road. It climbs gently north-east past Maison Smith to the Mont Royal chalet and the Belvédère Kondiaronk, the lookout terrace in front of it. Take the Boucle du Sommet (summit loop) north along the east side, with a short spur to the Cross, then back south along the west side, so the summit loop goes anticlockwise. Rejoin chemin Olmsted and walk back down to Lac aux Castors.

It is 3.8 km round with 59 m of ascent; allow about an hour. The grade is Easy: wide paths with gentle gradients.

Chemin Olmsted is shared with cyclists, and the cliff edges below the lookout are fenced. Until 10 October 2026 the city is resurfacing chemin Olmsted around Lac aux Castors: follow the signed diversions. The café, shop and toilets at Maison Smith are closed for now. The lookout honours Kondiaronk, the Wendat leader who was a key figure in the Great Peace of Montréal of 1701.

The car parks at Lac aux Castors, Maison Smith and the Camillien-Houde lookout are all paid, and some Maison Smith spaces are out of use during works. STM bus 11 crosses the mountain on chemin Remembrance; check its stops with the STM.
