The walk

From Yvoir station, follow the red bars up onto the heights above the village to the nature reserve of Champalle, open grassland over the valley. Go on to Evrehailles, a village of stone houses with an old moated castle, then by a path to the ruins of Poilvache, a medieval fortress on the edge of the cliffs high above the Meuse. Drop down to the village of Houx and walk back to Yvoir along the Meuse towpath, past the island of Yvoir.

It is 12.5 km round with 238 m of ascent; allow about 3½ hours. The grade is Moderate: lanes, field and woodland paths, two climbs and a long level finish by the river.

Some viewpoints are on the cliff edge and can be unnerving if you dislike heights. The ruins of Poilvache are a separate site with their own opening times. From October to the end of January, hunts can close woodland paths on set days: check ChasseOnWeb, Wallonia's hunting map, for your date and obey red notices.

Yvoir station, on the railway between Namur and Dinant, is at the start, with a small car park beside it; the tourist office's own start is the town hall, nearby.
