The walk

The walk starts from the National Trust car park at Porth Oer, the beach called Whistling Sands, on the north-west coast of Llŷn. The Llŷn Coastal Path leads south along the cliff tops, over headlands and past Dinas Fawr and Dinas Bach, two small hills of ancient pillow lava, to Mynydd Anelog, 191 m, on the Uwchmynydd headlands near the end of the peninsula. You return the same way.

It is 8.2 km there and back with 224 m of ascent; allow about 2½ hours. The grade is Easy.

The coast here is rocky, with crags, scree and low cliffs: keep to the path and away from the edges, especially in wind. The path crosses farmland, so keep dogs under control near livestock.

The car park uses pay and display machines or the JustPark app, says the National Trust. The Porthor beach is a short walk down from it.

  • Dinas Bach and Dinas Mawr, south of Porthor, are formed from pillow lavas about 600 million years old
