The walk

From the Muckross House car park, walk west past the house along the north shore of Muckross Lake, then out along the Muckross peninsula through Reenadinna yew wood to Brickeen Bridge. Cross it and follow the lakeside track round the west end of the lake to Dinis Cottage. Take the short path past the Meeting of the Waters to the Old Weir Bridge and back. Follow the Dinis road east along the south shore, then the walkers' path below the N71 towards Torc, and return north on the lakeshore track. The loop goes anticlockwise.

It is 10.9 km round with 174 m of ascent; allow about 3 hours. The grade is Moderate: level paths and tracks with only small rises, but it is long.

This is Killarney National Park, open to walkers on its paths; dogs must be on a lead at all times. Cyclists and jaunting cars share the paths and the Dinis road, so keep to one side. The boardwalk at Dinis and the Old Weir Bridge is slippery. In October the red deer stags are in the rut: give them room. The Dinis Cottage tea room opens only in season.

The car park is free. We found no bus to it: Killarney's railway and bus stations are about 4 to 5 km north, and park paths such as the Lakeside Walk lead from the town.

Good to know

  • Muckross Lake is the middle of Killarney's three lakes; the Old Weir Bridge spans the fast channel where water from the Upper Lake pours through towards Lough Leane.
  • The Muckross peninsula carries Reenadinna Wood, one of very few yew woods in Europe, growing on limestone.
  • Dinis Cottage is an old hunting lodge beside the Meeting of the Waters, used as a seasonal tea room.
  • Red deer graze the park; in October the stags are in the rut and should be watched from a distance.
