The walk
From the National Trust car park at Langdon Cliffs the walk follows the cliff-top path east along the White Cliffs, with the port of Dover below and the coast of France across the strait on a clear day. It passes Fan Bay, where a Second World War deep shelter was dug into the cliff, and reaches South Foreland Lighthouse, where Marconi made early radio experiments. It goes on above the cliffs and down to St Margaret's Bay and its beach. The way back climbs over Lighthouse Down and returns along paths a little inland.
It is 9.4 km with 248 m of ascent; allow about 3 hours. The grade is Moderate. The cliff path is broad and recently resurfaced in places.
The cliffs are sheer and fall away without warning: keep to the path and well away from the edge, especially in wind. Ponies and cattle graze the downs, so keep dogs on leads. The lighthouse has its own opening times.
The White Cliffs car park is National Trust pay and display, free for members. The nearest station is Dover Priory, about 2.4 km away.
