The walk

From the car park at Rakove Ravni, follow the signs for Gojška planina up through the forest to the first group of herders' huts. The path climbs on over open pasture to Velika Planina, a village of wooden huts with steep oval shingle roofs, and up to Gradišče, the highest point of the plateau at 1,666 m, with views to the Kamnik-Savinja Alps. Come down past the chapel of Mary of the Snows to the huts of Mala Planina and return through the forest to the car park.

It is 8.4 km round with 513 m of ascent; allow about 4 hours. The grade is Moderate: tracks and grassy paths, steep in places, and easy to lose in fog.

Herders' cattle graze the pastures in summer, so keep dogs on a lead and close gates. The plateau is exposed in thunderstorms. The cable car from Kamniška Bistrica is closed for maintenance from 15 October to 15 November 2026, but this walk starts from the road and does not need it.

Rakove Ravni is reached by a narrow road from the Kranjski Rak inn below the Volovljek pass, between Kamnik and Luče. The car park charges a fee.
