The walk

From the car park at the foot of the cone, take the path that climbs straight up the western slope. It is short but steep, on a paved and matted path, to the summit of Saebyeol Oreum (새별오름), with views over the scattered oreum of western Jeju, to Hallasan and, on a clear evening, to the sunset over the sea. Follow the crest east and come down the gentler path on the far side, back to the car park.

It is 1.6 km round with 65 m of ascent; allow about half an hour. The grade is Easy: short, but steep enough to need a few rests.

There is no shade, and the top is very windy. The steep slope is slippery after rain; keep to the matted path, as the grass and soil wear away easily. In October and November, when the silver grass is in plume, the car park fills early.

The cone stands beside Pyeonghwa-ro between Jeju city and Seogwipo; buses stop at Saebyeol Oreum.
