The walk

The walk starts from the small car park off the minor road to Shulista, near Kilmaluag at the north end of Skye. A good path runs north-west along the edge of a low escarpment, above the ruins of the abandoned village of Erisco, with Duntulm Castle on its crag beyond. Through a kissing gate the path heads for the gap between two hills, Meall Tuath and Meall Deas, and a rougher path climbs onto Meall Tuath to the white former coastguard hut, the Lookout. The return is the same way.

It is 5.1 km with 69 m of ascent; allow about 1½ hours. The grade is Easy: a well made path most of the way, boggy in places, and a short rough climb to the hut.

The cliffs below the Lookout drop about 100 m to the Rubha Hunish headland, so keep away from the edge. A steep rocky descent leads down to the headland itself; it needs scrambling and is not part of this walk. The Lookout is now a bothy kept by the Mountain Bothies Association. It is a good place to watch for whales and dolphins in summer.

Parking is free but there is room for only a few cars. There is no station on Skye.
