The walk

The walk starts at the bay at Camastianavaig, a small settlement on the Braes on the east coast of Skye, south of Portree. A path climbs from the road past rowan trees and up the open hillside to the edge of the escarpment, then follows it, along the top of cliffs that drop to the Sound of Raasay, to the trig point on the summit of Ben Tianavaig (413 m). Raasay lies across the water, the Storr and the Trotternish coast to the north, and the Red Hills and the Cuillin behind. The return is the same way.

It is 5.8 km there and back with 400 m of ascent; allow about 2¾ hours. The grade is Moderate: a steady climb of 400 m on an unsignposted hill path, with unprotected cliff edges along much of the way.

The path runs close to the edge of the escarpment in places and the cliffs are not fenced: keep back from the edge, take the easier line a little to the left where you can, and avoid the hill in strong wind or poor visibility. The hill paths are unmarked. NatureScot's access guidance asks you to keep your dog close to you while ground-nesting birds are breeding, usually from April to July.

Cars park beside the picnic tables in front of the beach at Camastianavaig; OpenStreetMap maps the picnic site but no car park, so park tidily and leave the road and gates clear. There is no station on Skye.
