The walk

From the car park at the Pont de Belleheid, follow the blue crosses numbered 55 up the valley. The path climbs beside the Hoëgne as it races over boulders and slabs, past the Cascade Marie-Henriette and the Cascade Léopold II, and over wooden footbridges. At the upper end it crosses the stream and comes back along the other side of the valley, higher up the slope, past the Belvédère de la Hoëgne shelter, down to Belleheid.

It is 7.5 km round with 164 m of ascent; allow about 2½ hours. The grade is Easy: stony, rooty paths and footbridges, slippery when wet or frosty.

The valley drains the Hautes Fagnes: after heavy rain or thaw the stream runs high and the lower paths can be wet. The burnt zone of the August 2026 fire, east of the N68, is still closed, but this valley lies outside it. From October to the end of January, hunts can close forest paths on set days: check ChasseOnWeb for your date and obey red notices.

The car park at the Pont de Belleheid is free. Spa-Géronstère station is about 7 km away.

Good to know

  • The Hoëgne rises on the Hautes Fagnes near the Baraque Michel and becomes a mountain stream below the Pont du Centenaire
  • The path along it was laid out in 1899 and opened by Queen Marie-Henriette; its two main waterfalls carry the names of King Leopold II and the queen
  • The loop is waymarked with blue crosses numbered 55 by the Jalhay-Sart tourist office
