The walk

From the car park at Fossatromma a path crosses the plateau to the step bridge over the river Bjoreio, a few dozen metres south of the lip where Vøringsfossen drops 182 m from the Hardangervidda plateau into Måbødalen. The bridge has 99 steps and a span of 47 m and hangs 50 m above the rapids. On the Fossli side the path climbs to the viewing platforms, then drops by the old pack trail, the Kløvstien, to the old Vøringsfoss bridge at the foot of the gorge, and a footway leads back to Fossatromma.

It is 1.8 km round with 60 m of ascent; allow an hour or more, with time at the viewpoints. The grade is Easy: short paths, steps and a bridge. Statens vegvesen's path map gives the way to Fossli by the step bridge as about 500 m, and the old pack trail, a way up to the viewing platforms that avoids the bridge, as about 525 m with a height difference of 65 m. Its page describes more than a kilometre of well-secured paths, several viewpoints and large and small bridges, and calls the site partially wheelchair accessible.

The bridge and the platforms are high above a gorge, and the official path map carries a pictogram of a person falling and a parent holding a child's hand: keep children close. The falls can be very loud when the discharge is high. Statens vegvesen's Hardangervidda page says that, because of a lot of snow and slippery ground, Vøringsfossen is closed in winter, and its Vøringsfossen page says parts of the attraction are closed in winter; neither gives dates or says which parts, so look at the pages before a visit late in the year. They say the toilets at Fossatromma and Fossli are normally open from the beginning of April to November. The Hardangervidda page also says the old road is closed because of rockslides; the walk keeps to the paths of the facility's own path map.

The car park at Fossatromma is marked as free on the map, and the path map shows toilets and an information point beside it. A bus stop is mapped at Fossatromma. Fossli, on the east side of the gorge, has its own parking, and the step bridge links the two sides.
