The walk
From the top of the Muottas Muragl funicular, with the lakes of the Upper Engadine stretching away towards Maloja, the path climbs south across the slope to the Segantini hut, where the painter Giovanni Segantini died in 1899. It continues along the mountainside high above Pontresina, facing the glaciers of the Bernina range across the valley, then contours round to Alp Languard and its chairlift.
It is 6.4 km one way with 379 m of ascent and 504 m of descent; allow about 3 hours. The grade is Hard: a narrow mountain path, rocky in places, with a steep climb to the Segantini hut and some exposed stretches.
In 2026 the funicular and the Alp Languard chairlift both run until 25 October; out of season the walk means a long climb and descent on foot. Snow can come early at this height.
The funicular's valley station is at Punt Muragl, a stop on the Rhaetian Railway between Samedan and Pontresina, with a car park. From Alp Languard the chairlift goes down to Pontresina village, which has a station on the same line.
