The hike
Private cars are not allowed at the South Kaibab Trailhead: park at the Grand Canyon Visitor Center and take the free Kaibab Rim (Orange) shuttle, a ride of about nine minutes. The trail switchbacks down below the rim, then follows the crest of a ridge north to Ooh Aah Point, about a mile down, and on to Cedar Ridge, a broad, flat spot with views across the canyon. Return the same way.
It is 2.9 miles (4.7 km) round trip with 1,130 feet (345 m) of climbing; allow about 2½ hours. The grade is Easy: it is short, but all of the climbing comes on the way back up, at the end of the walk.
There is no water on the trail and little shade. Summer temperatures below the rim often pass 100°F (38°C), so in summer avoid hiking between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., and carry all the water you need. Mules use this trail: when you meet them, step to the uphill side and stay quiet until they have passed.

Good to know
- The trail follows a ridge, not a side canyon, so the views open at once
- Reached by the park's free shuttle; there is no car park at the trailhead
- The walk back up is the hard half: there is no water on the trail
