The hike

From the Grand Canyon Visitor Center a paved path leads in a few minutes to Mather Point, a railed outcrop above the canyon. Turn left along the Rim Trail, which follows the edge west with the canyon open on your right the whole way. After 0.7 miles it reaches Yavapai Point and the Yavapai Geology Museum, built in 1928, whose windows look out on the rock layers that its displays explain. Return the same way.

It is 1.9 miles (3.1 km) round trip with 70 feet (20 m) of climbing; allow about an hour. The grade is Easy: it is paved and nearly level, and suitable for wheelchairs between Mather Point and Yavapai Point.

Mather Point is crowded at sunrise and sunset; the path beyond is quieter. From October 4, 2026 the museum is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Kaibab Rim (Orange) shuttle stops at Yavapai, so you can ride back to the Visitor Center. There are restrooms at both ends. The rim is at about 7,000 feet. After the flood of August 2026 the South Rim is under water restrictions, so bring drinking water with you. The Trail of Time starts just west of the museum if you want to walk on towards the Village.
