The walk

From the Wonderland car park, follow the track into the Grand Canyon, a gully between tilted sandstone ledges, and climb out of it on rock steps. The track rises over open rock slabs and through low forest to Silent Street, a narrow passage between high sandstone walls, with steps at each end. Beyond it a short climb leads to the Pinnacle, a fenced lookout on a sandstone outcrop high above Halls Gap, the Fyans Valley and Lake Bellfield. Return the same way.

It is 4 km there and back with 264 m of ascent; allow about 2 hours. The grade is Easy: a steady climb on rock steps, slabs and stairs, slippery when wet. Parks Victoria calls it the more challenging of its routes to the Pinnacle.

Keep behind the fence at the lookout, as the drop is sheer. On open rock, follow the track markers. Gariwerd is rich in Aboriginal cultural heritage, and parts of the park are closed to protect it, so keep to the marked tracks.

The Wonderland car park is a few minutes' drive west of Halls Gap, which is about three hours' drive west of Melbourne. An easier route to the Pinnacle starts from the Sundial car park.
