The walk
From the ferry pier in Kilronan (Cill Rónáin), walk up through the village onto An Bóthar Mór, the main road west. Beyond Mainistir, fork up the Dún Eochla road over the island's highest ground, near the old lighthouse and the stone fort of Dún Eochla, and rejoin An Bóthar Mór to Kilmurvey (Cill Mhuirbhigh). Return east by the coast path and the Low Road along the north shore, past the seals at Port Chorrúch. The loop goes clockwise. Dún Aonghasa, beyond Kilmurvey, is a separate walk.
It is 14.7 km round with 145 m of ascent; allow about 4 hours. The grade is Moderate: long, but mostly on quiet island roads, with some grass and limestone on the coast path.
This waymarked loop, Lúb Cill Mhuirbhigh, follows public roads and island green roads, managed by Comharchumann Forbartha Árann, the island co-operative. No dogs: it crosses grazed farmland. The roads are narrow and shared with minibuses, bikes and pony traps, and there is no shelter. Check the last ferry back before you set out.
There is no visitor parking: you come by ferry. Aran Island Ferries sail from Rossaveal all year (about 40 minutes), with a bus link from Galway; in October the last ferry back leaves at 17:00. The Doolin ferry runs only from late February to 1 November.

Good to know
- Inis Mór is the largest of the three Aran Islands, a tilted slab of Burren limestone criss-crossed by dry-stone walls.
- Dún Eochla, a round stone fort, sits on the island's highest ground beside the first Aran lighthouse, which was given up because it was often lost in fog.
- Grey seals haul out on the rocks at Port Chorrúch on the north shore.
- Kilronan is reached by ferry from Rossaveal (about 40 minutes, linked by bus from Galway city) or, in season, from Doolin.
