The walk
From the car park beside the Galle Clock Tower, inside the Fort, the line climbs to the Clock Tower on the Moon Bastion and follows the north rampart west to the Star Bastion at the north-west corner. It then runs south along the west rampart past the Clippenburg and Neptune bastions, south-east along the sea wall past the Triton Bastion to Flag Rock Bastion at the southern tip, and on to the lighthouse on the Point Utrecht Bastion. UNESCO says the ramparts follow the shape of the rock outcrops on the promontory rather than a geometric plan, with bastions on the seaward and landward sides. From the lighthouse the line goes north up the east side: OpenStreetMap maps a path on the wall as far as the Aurora Bastion and none our router can use beyond it, so the line follows the streets behind the wall to the Old Gate, then a path along the inside of the east rampart to the Vismarkt Bastion, and the street from the Main Gate back to the car park.
It is 2.9 km round and flat, with 10 m of ascent by the router's heights; allow about an hour of walking and longer with stops at the lighthouse and Flag Rock. The grade is Easy: 72 per cent of the line is on paths and the rest on streets, and about two thirds of it lies within 20 m of the wall as OpenStreetMap draws it. The Zwart Bastion (the Black Fort), which the Galle Heritage Foundation calls the oldest surviving construction in the Galle Fort, is on the east wall about 100 m off the line; no path to it is mapped.
The wall tops drop to the sea or to the old ditch, so keep children close and stay off the outer edge. OpenStreetMap tags a 34 m stretch beside the Clock Tower, a short bridge on the north rampart, as a demanding path: take it slowly. The FCDO warns that heavy rain in the inter-monsoon has raised the risk of flooding and landslides across Sri Lanka.
Wikivoyage's Galle page says walking round the Fort is free for everybody and warns of unauthorised guides who offer a walk round it for a fee. The Central Cultural Fund's tickets page, however, lists Galle Fort among its heritage sites, open 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with single-entry tickets and online booking, and its price list of 10 October 2026 shows a Galle (Museum) ticket at 6.00 US dollars full and 3.00 half but no ticket for the Fort itself. No page we read says a ticket is needed to walk the ramparts, nor what the Fund's Galle Fort ticket covers, so ask at the Fort. Wikivoyage also suggests walking the ramparts first thing in the morning, as many locals do. The Galle Heritage Foundation's Heritage Information Center, which its page places on Baladaksha Mawatha (the road OpenStreetMap names at the Old Gate), opens 9.00 am to 4.30 pm on weekdays except government holidays and sells guide books. OpenStreetMap tags the car park by the Clock Tower as charged and supervised (last confirmed on the map on 23 March 2025); Galle's bus station is about 400 m and its railway station about 600 m from the start in a straight line.
