The walk

From the National Trust car park in Bossington the walk crosses the footbridge and follows the coast path out to the old coastguard lookout on Hurlstone Point. It comes back a short way and climbs steeply up Hurlstone Combe onto the ridge above Bossington Hill, and a broad track runs east across the heath to Selworthy Beacon, high above the Bristol Channel with views to Wales. The way down follows Selworthy Combe through the woods to Selworthy, with its thatched cottages and white church, and woodland paths lead west by Lynch back to Bossington.

It is 8.5 km with 341 m of ascent; allow about 3 hours. The grade is Moderate. The climb up Hurlstone Combe is long and very steep.

The path out to the lookout is narrow and close to the cliff edge. Since 2024 the official coast path goes round the point; the walk takes the older line up the combe. The heath is exposed in strong wind, and the signs at Hurlstone can be confusing. Exmoor ponies graze near the cliffs; adders bask on the paths in summer. Dogs must be on leads on the heath from 1 March to 31 July.

Bossington car park costs £2 for two hours or £5 a day; members park free. There is no station near.
