The walk
From the National Trust car park at Webber's Post the walk follows Dicky's Path west to Hollow Combe, then climbs the north-east side of Dunkery Hill through the heather to Dunkery Beacon. At 519 m it is the highest point on Exmoor and in Somerset, with a cairn and a toposcope. The walk heads west along the broad summit ridge past the Rowbarrow cairns to Lang Combe Head, then turns back east on Dicky's Path, which contours across the northern slopes above the wooded Horner valley to Webber's Post.
It is 10.8 km with 355 m of ascent; allow about 3½ hours. The grade is Moderate. A short stretch near Lang Combe Head is on a moorland road.
The ridge is high, exposed heather moor: navigation is hard in mist or low cloud, and snow drifts onto the paths in winter. Exmoor ponies and red deer roam here. Dogs must be on leads from 1 March to 31 July for ground-nesting birds, and near livestock at any time.
Webber's Post has a gravel car park but no toilets; the nearest are at Horner. There is no station near.
