The walk
The walk goes out and back from a car park in the middle of Llanberis by the Llanberis Path, the longest but gentlest way up Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), beside the Snowdon Mountain Railway. After a stretch of road out of the village, the path climbs steadily past the Halfway House café and under the railway at Clogwyn station to the summit (1,085 m). Yr Wyddfa means "the tumulus", said to be the grave of the giant Rhita Gawr; the summit building, Hafod Eryri, opened in 2009.
It is 16.7 km with 974 m of ascent; allow about 7½ hours. The grade is Hard for the length and the climb from the valley floor, not for the path itself, which is gentle.
The summit is often cold and in cloud, so carry a map and compass, check the mountain forecast and be ready to turn back. In winter the upper slopes hold snow and ice and need an ice axe, crampons and experience.
The car park charges a fee. Bangor station is about 11 km away in a straight line. There are no mapped water sources on the route.
