The walk
The walk goes out and back from a pay car park on the A5 at Pont Cyfyng to Moel Siabod (872 m), the isolated peak above Capel Curig; the name means "shapely hill". From the car park it follows the A5 for about 250 m to the turning at Pont Cyfyng, then climbs by the old quarry track and the north-east ridge; the Daear Ddu ridge is a scramble and not part of this route. From the top the whole Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) horseshoe is laid out.
It is 9.1 km with 693 m of ascent; allow about 5 hours. The grade is Moderate, but the climb is long and sustained, and the upper north-east ridge is steep mountain ground.
The summit stands on its own and catches all the weather. Carry a map and compass, check the mountain forecast and be ready to turn back. In winter the ridge holds snow and ice and needs an ice axe, crampons and experience. Take care with the traffic on the A5.
The car park charges a fee. Pont-y-Pant station is about 4½ km away in a straight line. There are no mapped water sources on the route.
