The walk

From the car park at the north end of Avenida San Martín, follow the path north out of the village above the wide, braided Río de las Vueltas. For about a kilometre the way runs along the shoulder of the gravel road to Lago del Desierto, then a footpath leaves it on the left and winds through lenga and ñire forest. It passes the waterfall's own car park and climbs gently to the pool at the foot of the Chorrillo del Salto, which drops about 20 m over a rock wall. Return the same way.

It is 6.4 km there and back with 98 m of ascent; allow about 2 hours. The grade is Easy: a nearly level path, with care needed on the road stretch.

The park charges for its El Chaltén trails, with tickets sold online only and checked at the portal. On the road, keep to the edge and watch for traffic and dust. In winter the path near the falls can be icy, and the park requires poles and crampons from May to September.

The park calls this the easiest walk at El Chaltén, and it is a good choice for a windy day, when the high trails are not advised.
