The walk
From the car park at the national park entrance above Žabljak, walk down through pine and spruce forest to the north shore of the Black Lake. Follow the lakeside path west along the Big Lake, round its far end and on beside the Small Lake, which lies in its own bowl under steep wooded slopes. Come back along the south and east shores, with the rock walls of Međed rising above the water, and climb back up to the car park.
It is 4.9 km round with 62 m of ascent; allow about 1½ hours. The grade is Easy: good forest paths with roots and a few short climbs.
Durmitor National Park charges €5 a person a day in 2026, which covers the visitor centre and the nature trails, and boats can be hired on the lake. The park has been a national park since 1952 and on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1980. At about 1,400 m the paths can be snowy or icy from late autumn.
The car park at the park entrance is pay by the hour, and Žabljak, the nearest town, is a short walk away.
