The walk
From the car park at Worth Matravers the walk goes down the Winspit valley to the old cliff quarries at Winspit, where Purbeck stone was cut from caves in the cliff face. It climbs on to the coast path and follows the cliff top east past the quarries at Seacombe and Hedbury to the cliff top above Dancing Ledge, a flat shelf of rock at the foot of the cliff. The way back climbs to the Priest's Way, an old track across the limestone plateau, and follows it west to Worth Matravers.
It is 8.3 km with 189 m of ascent; allow about 2½ hours. The grade is Easy. There are steep steps into and out of the valleys along the coast.
The old quarry workings are dangerous: keep out of the caves and away from the cliff edges. The way down on to Dancing Ledge ends in a scramble over rock and is not part of the walk. Cattle and sheep graze the fields, so keep dogs on leads.
The car park at the entrance to Worth Matravers charges a fee. There is no station near; the nearest is Wareham, about 12 km away.
