The walk

From the National Trust car park at Wembury Beach, a marine conservation area known for its rock pools, the walk follows the coast path west behind the beach. A short path climbs to the old access road of HMS Cambridge, a former naval gunnery school, now narrowed and grassed by the National Trust, which leads to Heybrook Bay. The coast path brings the walk back east round Wembury Point, with the Great Mew Stone offshore, and along the shore to the beach.

It is 4.8 km with 60 m of ascent; allow about 1½ hours. The grade is Easy. It is mostly level, with a few short climbs.

The path runs near the cliff edge and is muddy in places. Ponies graze the point: keep dogs under close control near ponies and cattle, and on a lead near sheep. Dogs are banned from the main beach from 1 May to 30 September. The Devon Wildlife Trust's marine centre by the car park is open daily and free.

The car park costs £3 for two hours or £6 a day from February to October, and £3 a day in winter; members park free. There is no station near; the nearest is Plymouth, about 8 km away.
