The walk

From the RSCN visitor centre beside the Mujib Bridge on the Dead Sea Highway, take the walkway over the dam and drop into the river. From here you wade upstream through the gorge of Wadi Mujib (وادي الموجب) between towering walls of red and orange sandstone, the water ankle-deep in places and chest-deep in others. At two or three cascades fixed ropes and metal ladders help you up the rocks. The trail ends at the foot of a waterfall about 18 m high. Come back down the same way, floating where it is deep.

It is 1.9 km there and back, but allow 2 to 3 hours: wading against the current is slow. The grade is Easy on our scale, which cannot count the water; expect to be soaked, and wear shoes that grip on wet rock.

This is a self-guided trail: no guide is needed, but RSCN only lets you in if you are at least 18 and can swim, and you wear the life jacket handed out at the start. It runs from 1 April to 31 October and closes after rain: never enter when rain is forecast anywhere upstream.

RSCN's 2026 price is 23 JD for foreign visitors and 21 JD for residents; start between 08:00 and 15:00. Bring a dry bag for keys and phone.

Good to know

  • Mujib Biosphere Reserve, set up in 1985, runs from the Dead Sea shore at about 410 m below sea level up to 800 m on the plateau, the lowest nature reserve on Earth
  • Wadi Mujib, the Arnon of the Bible, flows all year from the Moab plateau and has cut a sandstone gorge to the Dead Sea
  • The Siq Trail wades up the river between red and orange walls to the foot of a waterfall about 18 m high
  • Nubian ibex, rock hyrax and caracal live in the reserve, and it lies on the flyway of migrating storks and birds of prey
