The walk
From the small car park at the end of the lane past Scorhill Farm the walk climbs onto Scorhill Down to its stone circle. It drops to the North Teign at the Teign-e-ver clapper bridge, beside the holed boulder known as the Tolmen, and climbs past Batworthy Corner to Shovel Down and its double stone rows and the Longstone. It goes on to Kestor Rocks and the Round Pound below, then lanes lead to Teigncombe, a footbridge crosses the North Teign, and field paths and the lane from Gidleigh bring it back.
It is 8.0 km with 246 m of ascent; allow about 2½ hours. The grade is Easy. About a third is on quiet lanes.
The crossings at Teign-e-ver are on clapper slabs; the river rises fast after rain. The moor is open and featureless in mist. The walk stays outside the Okehampton firing range, which begins a little to the west. Ponies and sheep graze, so keep dogs on leads.
The car park is free but holds only a handful of cars, and the lane is narrow: arrive early. There is no station near; the nearest is Okehampton Interchange, about 10 km away.
