The walk

From the National Trust's Waterfall entrance the path drops under the old railway bridge into Lydford Gorge, the deepest in south-west England. It follows the River Lyd to the foot of the Whitelady Waterfall, which falls about 30 m. The way back climbs through the woods to the old railway line, which runs along the top of the gorge, and returns along it to the entrance.

It is 2.7 km with 103 m of ascent; allow about 1 hour. The grade is Easy. There are long flights of rugged steps and narrow paths above fast water.

The rock is slippery even when dry, so wear sturdy shoes. Dogs are welcome on short leads but must be kept out of the river, and there is no swimming. The gorge is National Trust land with an admission charge; members go free. From 2 November 2026 the other end of the gorge, with the Devil's Cauldron, closes until spring, but this trail and the railway path stay open. Paths can close at short notice after heavy rain.

Parking at the Waterfall entrance is free. There is no station near; the nearest is Gunnislake, about 14 km away.
