The walk

From the car park by Bennett's Cross, a medieval waymark beside the B3212, the walk follows a bridleway east past the remains of a beehive hut. It crosses the road and climbs to Hookney Tor, then drops to Grimspound, a Bronze Age enclosure with the remains of hut circles inside a great ring of stone. The way back runs west past Headland Warren to Birch Tor, then down through the deep gullies of the Birch Tor and Vitifer tin mines, worked until 1925, and north to the car park.

It is 5.8 km with 235 m of ascent; allow about 2 hours. The grade is Easy. The paths are clear but rough, and wet in places.

This is high, exposed moor at around 490 m. Keep out of the old mine workings and adits. Ponies and sheep graze here: English Heritage asks for dogs on leads at Grimspound. Bracken on the moor carries ticks in summer.

The car park is small and free, with more parking in lay-bys along the road; it fills in high season. There is no station near; the nearest is Okehampton, about 16 km away.
