The walk
From Widow's Row car park, walk west through the edge of Dundrum village and up Castle Hill to Dundrum Castle, on a wooded knoll above the village; it is believed to have been built around 1177 and looks out over the Inner Bay. Back at the car park, take the Dundrum Coastal Path north-east: a grassy track on an old railway line that runs along the edge of the Inner Bay, crosses an embankment over the bay and ends at a junction with stone steps. Return the same way.
It is 6.9 km round with 56 m of ascent; allow about 2 hours. The grade is Easy: a level grassy track and short paths, with the castle knoll as the only climb.
The Visit Mourne, Gullion and Strangford page says that from 6 October 2026 the castle is open Tuesday to Sunday 9 am to 4 pm, last admission 3.30 pm, and on bank holiday Mondays; entry is free. On other Mondays the site stays open but the keep, the toilets and the visitor information centre are not accessible. The castle stands on a sloping rocky knoll, and children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. The Inner Bay's mudflats are important for wildfowl and waders in winter; the path page asks walkers to be respectful of birdwatchers.
