The walk
From the National Trust car park above Chapel Porth the walk climbs the coast path onto the heathland cliffs to Wheal Coates, where the Towanroath engine house stands above the sea among the ruins of the mine. It follows the cliff path north to St Agnes Head and the National Coastwatch lookout, then turns inland over the heath to the top of St Agnes Beacon, 192 m, with views along the north Cornish coast. Beacon Drive and a path down the valley lead back above the stream to Chapel Porth.
It is 6.5 km round with 191 m of ascent; allow about 2 hours. The grade is Easy. About a quarter is on Beacon Drive and the lane to the car park.
There are cliff edges and old mine shafts beside the paths, so keep to the paths, especially with children and dogs; the National Trust asks for dogs to be kept under close control. The paths are uneven and muddy after heavy rain. Dogs are not allowed on Chapel Porth beach from 1 July to 31 August, 10am to 6pm; the walk stays above the beach.
The Chapel Porth car park is run by the National Trust, with charges that members do not pay. The nearest station is Redruth, about 7 km away; buses run to St Agnes village.
