The walk
From the P1 lay-by at the Gortlecka crossroads, walk east along the road, then follow the path past the edge of Lough Gealáin and out across wide areas of open limestone pavement. The marked path climbs the south-east side of Mullaghmore, whose folded layers of limestone make it the best-known hill in the Burren, to the summit. Return the same way. This is the line of the national park's Mullaghmore Return trail.
It is 6.9 km there and back with 152 m of ascent; allow about 2 hours. The grade is Moderate: the climb is short, but the ground is rough, rocky limestone, and the park itself grades this trail very difficult.
This is a remote upland walk for competent walkers: wear strong shoes or boots. There are no facilities in the park, and camping is not allowed. Keep dogs on a lead at all times.
Parking is a small lay-by just before the crossroads, the park's P1 (grid reference R303944). In summer a free park-and-ride bus runs from Corofin.
