The walk
From the village parking in Turville the walk climbs the steep field behind the village to Cobstone Windmill, the mill from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, with a fine view down the Hambleden valley. It goes on through Mill Hanging Wood and down to Fingest, whose Norman church has an unusual double-gabled tower. From Fingest a path follows the valley south to Skirmett, and field paths lead back north-west to Turville.
It is 5.1 km with 168 m of ascent; allow about 1½ hours. The grade is Easy. The climb to the windmill is short and steep; about a quarter is on quiet lanes.
The windmill is a private house: view it from the path. The field paths cross stiles and can be muddy in winter, and some fields hold livestock. Turville and Fingest have featured in many films and television series and can be busy at weekends.
There is a small free parking area in the centre of Turville; the pub's car park is for customers. There is no station near; the nearest is Saunderton, about 8 km away.
