The walk
The walk starts from the Glenmore Visitor Centre car park, which charges. A track past the reindeer centre and a rougher path round the hillside lead to An Lochan Uaine, the green lochan, and the main path climbs gently to Ryvoan bothy. Just before the bothy a well-built path turns uphill, with steps on the steeper parts, to the summit of Meall a' Bhuachaille. The descent goes west to the bealach below Creagan Gorm and down a clear path, then orange-waymarked forest paths, back to the visitor centre.
It is 8.9 km (5.5 miles) with 548 m (1,800 ft) of ascent; allow about 4 hours. The grade is Moderate.
Meall a' Bhuachaille is a Corbett of 810 m with a big windshelter cairn on top. Standing a little apart from the high Cairngorms, it looks straight at Cairn Gorm and its northern corries, down to Loch Morlich, and north over the Abernethy Forest, the largest area of native forest in Britain.
The paths are good throughout, but the top is exposed and the weather changes fast. Look out for the Cairngorm reindeer, which sometimes graze the ridge.
