The walk
From the bus stop in San José, walk out of the village on the earth track towards the Genoveses windmill and take the Los Genoveses path, a track and path through the coastal scrub, to the Playa de los Genoveses. A path and track then carry on along the coast to the Casa del Mónsul, where the Junta de Andalucía's Vela Blanca path begins. Return the same way.
It is 14.3 km there and back with 232 m of ascent; allow about 4 hours. The grade is Moderate on our count, because of the length: the ground is gentle. This is our own out-and-back line, not one of the Junta's waymarked paths. For the pieces, the Junta's leaflets give the Genoveses path as 2.3 km one way, 1 h 30, low difficulty, with a greatest height difference of 41 m, and put the Casa del Mónsul about 4.5 km from San José by the track.
There is little shade, and the park's leaflets ask walkers to carry drinking water and wear suitable clothing and footwear. They say free camping, fires and fishing are not allowed and ask you to stay on the marked paths, and that no special permit is needed for either of their paths. A Junta order (BOJA no. 46, 10 March 2025) restricted access to the beaches west of San José, between Genoveses and Cala Carbón, to motor vehicles with authorisation from 21 June to 28 September 2025; it concerns vehicles, not walkers.
The Junta's leaflets (printed 2021) name a car park of about 20 spaces at the junction with the paved road, 150 m from the start panel of the Genoveses path, and one of about 50 spaces at the Casa del Mónsul.
