The walk

From the Grand Canyon car park on Evans Lookout Road, follow the track west to Neates Glen and go down long flights of steps into the gorge. The track then follows Greaves Creek downstream through the Grand Canyon, a narrow slot of mossy sandstone walls, ferns and small waterfalls, passing under overhangs and crossing the creek on stepping stones. Near its lower end it climbs, again on many steps, to Evans Lookout above the Grose Valley. A track beside Evans Lookout Road leads back to the car park.

It is 5.9 km round with 201 m of ascent; allow about 2 hours. The grade is Moderate: hundreds of steep, often wet steps, creek crossings and slippery rock, though the track itself is well made. NSW National Parks grades it challenging and suggests three to four hours.

Never walk in the canyon before, during or after heavy rain, when the creek can rise fast. Wear shoes with good grip. The canyon stays cool in summer, but the climb out to Evans Lookout can be hot. The park can close at times in poor weather or high fire danger.

Blackheath station, on the Blue Mountains line from Sydney, is about 4 km away by road. No park entry fee is charged in this part of the park.
