The walk
From the top station of the Oeschinensee gondola, follow the path past Läger towards the lake, then take the mountain path that climbs north-east onto the Heuberg. It traverses high above the lake, with the cliffs of the Blüemlisalp, Oeschinenhorn and Doldenhorn across the water, to the alp of Oberbärgli. From there a steep path drops past Unterbärgli to the north shore, which leads back to the Berghotel by the lake and on to the gondola.
It is 8.9 km round with 394 m of ascent; allow about 3½ hours. The grade is Hard: the Heuberg path and the descent from Oberbärgli are steep, rough and exposed in places, and need sure feet and a head for heights.
The south shore below the Spitze Stei has been closed since 2019 because of rockfall and debris flows, and the walk keeps to the north side. Until 8 November 2026 the gondola needs a booked time slot for the ride up. The mountain paths are usually clear from June; in October snow and ice can make them dangerous. Swimming in the lake and cycling on the paths have their own rules, posted at the lake.
The gondola's valley station is in Kandersteg, a short walk from the railway station, with a paid car park.
