The walk

The walk starts high on the common, about 340 m up, and goes out and back to the summit of Sugar Loaf (Y Fâl, 596 m), the conical hill above Abergavenny. The summit cone is ahead of you all the way. The line crosses the common, dips briefly, then climbs the cone; it is on path throughout, over open hillside that has been National Trust land since 1936.

It is 4.6 km with 411 m of ascent; allow about 3 hours. The grade is Easy: the paths are clear and the high start does much of the work, though the final climb up the cone is short and steep.

The top is open and exposed to the wind, and in cloud it is easy to take the wrong path off the summit, so carry a map, check the forecast and turn back if it closes in. Winter snow and ice make the cone more serious.

The start is the Mynydd Llanwenarth roadside car park on the common above Abergavenny. Abergavenny station is about 5 km away in a straight line. There are no mapped water sources on the route.
