The walk

From the car park on the west side of the Icefields Parkway, the path climbs south through the last stunted spruce and fir in tight switchbacks. On the open crest it turns south-east and rises gently along the broad tundra ridge. The Saskatchewan Glacier, an outlet of the Columbia Icefield, comes into view below, and the marked trail ends at a viewpoint a little further on. Return the same way. Informal paths to the west peak are not part of this walk.

It is 5.5 km there and back with 272 m of ascent; allow about 2 hours. The grade is Easy: a short, steady climb on a good path, then an open ridge.

The ridge is exposed to cold wind, storms and lightning. It holds snow into July and gets new snow from early autumn; Parks Canada reported icy, slippery sections on 3 October 2026. Once it is under snow it is winter mountain terrain, not a walk. Stay on the path, as the tundra is fragile. Carry bear spray. A Parks Canada pass is needed.

The car park is on Highway 93N, 9 km south of the Columbia Icefield Centre, with no parking charge and no public transport. Winter tyres or chains are required on the parkway from 1 November to 31 March; there are no services in winter.
